Nobody holds a rank for showing up. A Defender earns their place by verifiably useful work — a build shipped, a supply run carried, a watch stood — logged where everyone can see it. Useful work earns crew credits at the ship's bank, and credits are the record that the work was real. That is the whole deal: prove it, and it counts.
